No matter where you are on your fitness journey, just starting out, or have been traveling on the path for years, I applaud you for a worthwhile pursuit. It’s the best investment you can make. Sure some methods may change over time and we may debate which path is better, or worse, but the core belief still remains. Taking care of our bodies is important.
Along this journey you may have come across protein shakes. Supplementing with protein can be a useful tool as for a variety of reasons. Meal on the go, pre or post workout energy or recovery, snack, etc. But protein shakes have gotten a bad rap for being "bro-ish" and horrible tasting.
Well in the TrueForm spirt of empowering your performance here are 5 ways to add some serious power and flavor to your protein shakes:
- Spice it up with Turmeric!
Turmeric has been a spice used in eastern cooking for thousands of years. It contains compounds with medicinal properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant & is linked to improved brain function to name a few.
2. Use Frozen Raspberries instead of ice.
The number one thing I hate is watered down protein shakes. If I add too little water then the shake wont mix, if I add too much ice the shake becomes clumpy. I can’t win. Except when you switch out the ice for frozen raspberries! Not only with your shake not be watery, it will remain cold & crisp and a great way to add more vitamins and fiber to your diet.
Kefir is a cultured, enzyme-rich food filled with friendly microorganisms that help balance your inner ecosystem. It supplies complete protein, essential minerals, valuable B vitamins and is 99% lactose free! Start your shake off with a ½ cup of kefir ½ cup of your water, raw milk, or your preferable substitute.
4. Switch out the peanut butter for flax seed oil.
A protein shake is not only a great for getting protein in, but also a great way to get some healthy fats in as well. With my chocolate protein I immediately think of peanut butter! But that’s not always the best option for my diet. That’s where Flax seed oil comes in. Its full of omega-3 fatty acids, alpha-linoleic acid (immunity booster) and vitamin E. Add a teaspoon to your shake for a great taste today!
5. Use cold tea as your base
Wait, what?!? Yes, I said tea. For a refreshing shake you can sip on take some left over cold green tea and use that as your liquid base. I prefer matcha green tea, which is packed with antioxidants, boost metabolism, detoxifies, and is rich in fiber and vitamins. You can even get it in powder form and mix it right in with your shake. (Vanilla or unflavored protein works best here)
